Can you recommend some books to me?

I'll try anything once, I have read all the books in my house and need something else.

The World According to Garp by John Irving is my personal favorite, but I recently read Atonement by Ian McEwan, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, which were both TERRIFIC. Also, I'm not usually attracted to YA fiction, but The Hunger Games was awesome. I read the sequel yesterday, and I loved it as well.

My favorite of the moment is Nokosee: Rise of the New Seminole by Micco Mann. It has the defiant voice of a 17 year old girl who manages to overcome everything thrown at her in the course of the novel which is a lot-- and she does it in a way that would make all girls proud-- not in a superhuman way or through the assistance of some heroic act of a man but via her own means.

Cherry by Mary Karr. A memoir about teens, sex and growing up in rural Texas as told through the gritty, beautiful prose of one of America's best authors.

The Liar's Club by Mary Karr. Another moving memoir recounting her earlier years (you should probably read this one first and then Cherry).

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Pulitzer Prize winner re a teen on a quest.

She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb. Begins with the life of a school girl with no friends and follows her through many wrong turns until she makes a right one and finds love. The book gives us one of the most memorable characters in literature: Dolores Price.

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. It's a Norman Rockwell painting done in dark, mysterious tones about friendship between next door neighbors, relationships with fathers, books, libraries and a mysterious carnival that rolls into town in the middle of the night that changes everything that comes after it. Bradbury's best.

Mary (above) seems to have the same taste in books as I do, would highly recommend any of her suggestions. Also try 'The Shadow of the Wind' by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, or 'A Quiet Belief in Angels' byRJ Ellory, or 'Life of Pi' by Yann Martel, which I believe they are making into a film, which somehow I just can't imagine how it would work.
