When you leave the grocery store with hot dogs, head straight home and refrigerate or freeze them immediately. If there is no product date, hot dogs can be safely stored in the unopened package for 2 weeks in the refrigerator; once opened, only 1 week. For maximum quality, freeze hot dogs no longer than 1 or 2 months. And, of course, never leave hot dogs at room temperature for more than 2 hours and no more than 1 hour when the temperature goes above 90 °F.
Hope this helped. :)

We hardly keep hotdogs at our home and when we do we actually freeze them because a pack will go bad before we eat it all. So no I don't Even if I did keep them in the fridge I wouldn't my child only goes in there if we tell her to or ask she never just goes and grabs things she is only 3. when she is old enough to go in and just make a sandwhich per say choking should not be an issue

Definitely not in the can. Put then in the fridge in a sealed container and use within a couple of days at the most.
