On your model vehicle, if the pick up coil was bad the vehicle wouldn't run. Older style GM that use a vacuum advance will usually start but die on acceleration. The pick up coil is located under the distributor rotor and base plate. To replace it requires removal of the distributor. If removal is necessary, make sure the engine is TDC/top dead center #1 cylinder. It is the front left/drivers side cylinder and the rotor should be pointing toward that cylinder. The timing marks should be on zero and is located by looking down behind the water pump.

If your vehicle runs, but dies on acceleration the problem could be the ignition coil or module.

    Hope this helps. Christopher

yes no spark. here's how it works. you have a distributor module(d/m) you have a spark controller(s/c) and you have an ignition coil(i/c). the the d/m picks up a signal from the dist. and sends it to the s/c which then sends it back to the d/m and then on to the i/c, the pick up coil (p/c) is what the d/m is using to find out where the distrtibutor is located at in th firing sequence. now what is the actual spark problem you are having? if you are having a problem with the engine in drive, it could be a bad d/m or s/c, to check the p/c take a volt ohm meter and check the continuity of the p/c by uncoupling it from the d/m. that will let you know if it's good.if it shows any reading (00.3 for example) then you have a cicuit and its good if it shows open then it's bad.
