first of all, you can't add GHz to a hard drive. Ghz is the speed of the processor and you can't upgrade that.
Before doing any of that, you should do a full spyware/malware scan with malwarebytes. 1 GB of memory should be more than enough for Windows XP. Sounds like you have a lot of programs starting up and eating up your available memory.
Upgrading the hard drive will not make the machine any faster, unless the hard drive is faulty or dying. All it will do is give you more space to store things.
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE IT TO GEEK SQUAD! The price you will pay for parts and labor, you could buy a brand new laptop.

the main elementary and inexpensive circulate is to purchase extra RAM. As somebody else suggested, maximum purchasers prefer XP over Vista. yet Vista would have an prolonged shelf lifestyles of help from M/S than XP will. once you're thinking this as a end hollow till you're able to have adequate money a clean device or pick to change structures (ie MAC) then by potential of all potential purchase some new RAM.

Okay that 1.66 Ghz is mistakenly your cpu, not your hard drive. Upgrading your hard drive does nothing. The Ram will help a little with your slowness but only if your running multiple programs. My guess is your overloaded with temporary data and registry entries. Here's a few programs I recommend running to clean up the clutter
CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/
Defraggler http://www.piriform.com/defraggler
Auslogics Registry Defrag http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defr...

that 1.66 GHz is for the processor, not the hard drive.
Anyway, the only thing they can be upgraded in a laptop that can affect performance is the ram.
