Is this a balanced equation for the combustion of propane ? C3H8 + 5O2 ---> 4H2O + 3CO2?

C3H8 + 5O2 ---> 4H2O + 3CO2

    well lets see

    C3H8 + ?O2 ---> ?H2O + ?CO2

    C3H8 + (X)O2 ---> (Y)H2O + (Z)CO2

    To balance a combustion reaction you need to:

    first count the number of carbon in the main compound (propane) which is 3

    assign it for CO2 instead of (Z)

    then count the number of hydrogen which is 8

    then assign it for H2O instead of (Y)

    finally count the number of oxygen O in the products which will be (4*2 + 4 = 10)

    then divide it by 2 = 5 because of O"2"

    finally you will find that the equation C3H8 + 5O2 ---> 4H2O + 3CO2 is balanced

    Yes, propane combusts. It is possible to write a balanced equation to illustrate that.

    Yes.... You answer is perfect.... In looking for a balance... always count the amount of each element on the right and make sure it is equal to the amount on the left.... You've done a good job so far...

    Good luck!

    You have equal numbers of C's, H's and O's on the left and right sides, so yes - it's perfectly balanced. You can always check your answers that way.

    What on the earth you are trying to do.

    You have mind, and thus you took out the balanced chemical equation for the combustion, than why are you asking.

    just wasting the points friend,

    off course it is a balanced equation.

    see 3c's, 8H's, 10O's, all equal on both sides then what remains.

    It's all balanced.

    Don't waste precious 5 points my friend.
