Hello there,
I am not going to group these by the 50s and 60s, but rather group them according to the style of music.
1. Pioneers of Rock
This group has to start with Chuck Berry. Johnny B Goode is an example of his work. That is a classic by any definition. And of course Elvis Presley, Blue Suade Shoes is an example. Buddy Holly and the Crickets try Peggy Sue for an example. Big Bopper try Sweet Little Sixteen. Link Wray try Rumble (this guy has never gotten the credit he deserves). For Duane Eddy try Rebel Rouser (nice twangy guitar).
2. American rock sound before the British invasion.
This group has to start with the Beach Boys. Try I Get Around or Surfin USA as samples. **** Dale and the Deltones you really need to hear Miserlou (love the slippery sound). While you're listening to heavy reverb may as well listen to the Surfaris Wipe Out, the Chantay's Pipeline and the Ventures Walk Don't Run. Then you can listen to some hot rod songs. Jan and Dean the Little Old Lady from Pasadena, the Rip Chords Hey Little Cobra, and Ronnie and the Daytonas Little GTO. And of course, the Kingsmen Louie Louie.
3. British Invasion up to psychadelic (acid rock). Of course you already know the Beatles. The Rolling Stones Satisfaction. The Kinks You Really Got Me, the Animals House of the Rising Sun, the Zombies Time of the Season, the Yardbirds (Jimmy Page later of Led Zeppelin) For Your Love. The Who Pinball Wizard.
4. Psychadelic (acid rock).
This group has to start with Jimmy Hendrix. Try Purple Haze, Foxey Lady or Hey Joe. Moody Blues Nights in White Satin. Jefferson Airplane White Rabbit and Somebody to Love. The Cream (Eric Clapton) Sunshine of Your Love and Crossroads, Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin) Take Another Piece of My Heart. The Blue Cheer Summertime Blues. Steppenwolf Born to Be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride. Doors Light My Fire. Vanilla Fudge You Keep Me Hanging on. First Edition (would you believe Kenny Rogers singing acid rock) Just Dropped In to See What Condition My Condition Was In. The Byrds Eight Miles High. The Yardbirds Over Under Sideways Down. Country Joe and the Fish I Feel Like I'm Fixin to Die Rag. Iron Butterfly Ina Gadda di Vida (Wow). Donovan Leitch Hurdy Gurdy Man. Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. Procol Harum Whiter Shade of Pale, Strawberry Alarm Clock Incense and Peppermints.
Lastly, I highly recommend the recordings from the Monterrey Pop Festival from the summer of love 1967 and Three Days of Love and Peace (Woodstock) 1969. The recordings are great. If you were not there to experience it yourself, the videos are a good way to experience the times.
Later,
I have completely missed the R&B music and Motown. I can add some of that if you want.
