How do you erase an icon off your desktop?

I have an icon on my desktop even though I erased the file. I tried to delete it but it said try again the file could not be found.

Update:

And I tried dragging it into the recycle bin

    Right click on it and drag and drop in recycle bin. Then empty recycle bin.

    you can restart your computer and try it again. if this doesn't work than maybe you can start your computer with safe mode and erase it. good luck ;)
