Please help...9 month old suddenly waking up every hour?

i have a 9 month old baby girl who has been sleeping through the night since she was 3-4 months. she would sleep 8-10 hours and then after waking up to feed she would sleep 3-4 hours more. when two teeth started coming in (around 7-8 months) she started waking up twice a night and i would feed her and put her back to sleep. that lasted a few weeks and then she started sleeping her normal 8 hours for a few weeks and if she woke up before the 8 hours i would just go in and pat her and she would fall back asleep. then all of a sudden one night a couple days ago she woke up after a couple hours and for 3 hours woke up every 20-40 minutes and then every hour for the rest of the night. she wouldnt go back to sleep when i patted her she would just cry harder and she would cry for over an hour so i have been picking her up. the past couple days she has been waking up every hour and waking up early and not taking very long naps. like 20 minutes. i am exhausted and hardly getting any sleep and i have absolutly no idea what is going on! she has always been good at bed time.

i tried calling to get her a dr appointment but it takes at least 3 weeks to get an appointment and they are very resistant to giving me a referral (we are military).

does anyone have any idea as to what might be going on or have had this happen to them?

Update:

shes already on solids but still breastfeeding

Sounds like a problem with her sleep associations. She falls asleep while you are patting her and then wakes and you are gone. She needs this patting back to be able to go back to sleep again. Babies have no concept of sleep and don't understand that time passes while they are asleep, so if she wakes up and ANYTHING is different to when she fell asleep she will need it back to drift off again.

Try getting her to settle herself back to sleep, without any help from you. Try patting her only until she stops crying and then give her a chance to fall asleep on her own. Make sure she is turned away from you so she can't see you, so she doesn't wake up and wonder where you have gone. Just make sure her sleep environment remains exactly the same all night long.

I am assuming she is eating solid foods now? Has she been eating ANYTHING different? Taking any type of medication? Since she has been so good at bedtime up to now I suspect that there is something causing this.

I know you are tired and worried. I don't usually do answers in this section as my kids are all grown but I remember a few of these times with mine. E-Mil me if you like and we can do a "maybe this and maybe that" until she sees her Dr.

    Good luck

Maybe she's just catching a small cold or something and is uncomfortable.
