That is messed up.
If you still have your OS DVD, put it into your DVD drive.
Go to repair my computer, and choose your OS and click next.
Choose recovery console
Type these command
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr
That should do it.
You may have gotten a boot sector virus that is why you got that BOOTMGR is missing.

Windows Vista introduced a new boot loader architecture, a new firmware-independent boot configuration and storage system called Boot Configuration Data (BCD), and a new boot option editing tool, BCDEdit (BCDEdit.exe). There are third party utilities like EasyBCD and DualBootPro (Priced) products available to make the changes very easy.
1. Use Vista recovery CD/installation disk to repair the vista installation. This will place a new boot loader in vista partition. Once you do this you will not be able to boot from XP.
2. Download EasyBCD and install this application in Vista.
3. Click on Add/Remove Entries
4. Select Windows XP Sp2
5. Give the name as you would like to see when the machine boots.
6. Save and restart the PC
When the machine boots, it will show a boot screen and you can select the os to boot.

i think the best solution might be to have both operating systems boot from the same hard drive, and use the second as storage for them both, create 2 partitions of equal size on the hard drive, generally i think you should install the latest OS first, so vista, then xp, i have done it the other way too.. you can of course do it your way, but i think you will need to pick which device to boot from each time your computer starts, or change the MBR on the boot drive so that it points to the other drive, there are various good programs for this, easyBCD comes to mind, but the first method i think would be a lot simpler (although you wold have to reinstall at least one of them now) you also said vista was not working at all when you try to boot from the other drive so maybe it would be worth it to start over if you cant get it to work that way

you need to have the flexibility to repair this in case you have your domicile windows deploy discs. i'm assuming you're working domicile windows Vista, yet XP is comparable. you need to run the fix gadget on the deploy disc, and it may fix your boot loader.
