People call me a 'poser' because I don't listen to older rock?

But the truth is, I've heard them, and can't stand their music

According to my friends, I'm not a true rock music fan because I only really like newer bands.

Why is that?

It is because there are people in this world who, for reasons having mostly to do with their own insecurities, feel the need to have everybody else like what they like. This is how they choose to validate their feelings, out of some emotional need to do so.

In the development of my musical taste, I discovered as a teenager that I liked a lot of stuff that my friends didn't like. And once I quit worrying about what other people liked or what people thought about what I liked, I got past a bunch of nonsense and was able to focus on the music. Which is really the point of listening to it in the first place, don't you think?

I have teenagers and I tell my kids to make up their own minds about what they are going to listen to. Who really cares what somebody else thinks?

Under your friends' theory, I am not a "true rock fan" because I don't listen to Chuck Berry, Chubby Checker and very rarely do I listen to Elvis. So what? I hope you are not actually buying this premise.

Nod politely, say "okay" and then ignore the rest of what they have to say on this subject.

Rock is rock; music is music. Just because you don't like the older bands, doesn't mean you're a "poser."

this is probably because they think that you have to listen to rock from their grandparents' day because they were raised listening to it and now they think they are "real rock fans" but you dont have to listen to older rock i dont and im considered a "true rock fan" truth is just listening to rock music makes you a rock fan

As long as you recognize where the new bands are standing on the shoulders of giants, I have little issue with your liking new bands.

I cant stand it when people think only their opinions are right...come on people, that's like saying if you dont like chocolate, then its HORRIBLE and no one else should. Tell them they're being dumb and everyone has their own taste.

Music is music. Its all opinionated. As long as you like what you listen to then its fine.

You like what you like. I don't like new music but I'm not going to call my friends and other people names if they don't like what I like. Tell your douche friends to suck it haha.
