I think a litter of puppies has PARVO???HELP!!!!?

I'm on my way to take 11 puppies to the animal shelter and I fear they have the parvo virus. Will the animal shelter take care of them and give them their shots? And parvo shot? Ive never dealt with this before...

Cool... you're going to take infected pups to the shelter so they can INFECT AND KILL any of a number of other dogs there. Do you know how shelters deal with a parvo outbreak? - they EUTHANIZE EVERY DOG THERE.

    GOOD JOB!

If the puppies have parvo they will most likely be euthanized as the shelter rarely has the resources to treat them. A vaccine will do them no good if they are already infected. You MUST tell the shelter you suspect the puppies have parvo. Do not take the puppies in call them from the car. The puppies will likely never see the inside of the shelter but be euthaized outside as the shelter will not risk an outbreak that would likely result in every dog at the shelter being euthanize. If you do not tell them or if you take the puppies inside and expose other dog then a lot more than these 11 puppies will die.

No, sorry, but animal shelters just don't have the funds to treat parvo, especially since there is no guarantee they will live even with treatment. They will all be euthanized, even the ones who aren't showing symptoms, simply because they have been exposed to the virus and they won't want to take the chance that they will spread it. My brother used to work at an animal shelter and he said that anytime someone brought in a sick animal, they didn't even attempt to treat it, because people don't want to adopt sick animals and they already have an overflow of healthy animals.

And please, if you are keeping the mother dog, get her spayed so this won't happen again. Be sure to clean your house and yard, or wherever the puppies were at, with bleach. The virus can live up to 7 years and you don't want to spread it to any future animals you may have, or if someone visits you they can carry it home to their own animals. Bleach is the only thing that kills the virus.

My dog is having her first litter too! I can't answer all your questions, but I can answer some. First of all, im not sure how you will know when her water brakes. But I do know that a dogs temperature is usually 101.5 degrees. And when it drops down to 98.5 it means that in about four hours they will go into labor. My dogs temperature dropped today to a little over 98.5, so late tonight it should happen!! So get a thermometer! It is best to have the puppies inside, so you can always be there for the whole part of the puppies life. If its outside, you can't move the puppies in, and they need to be where its warmer. So inside is good. Also, if your dog is outside when the puppies are coming, she will go to a spot somewhere, and it will be to late. So watch your dog when they are outside when it gets close to their due date. I do not know whether the male should be there or not, but I know a dog likes to be comfortable when in labour. If he makes her happier, or calmer, or something then I guess it could help. If not then theres no need. You definetly need more than sheets and papers. Dogs like to create a little nest, like how they would in the wild. With my dog, we did not get a whelping box, but we got a little kids swimming pool (the plastic ones that are about a foot deep) (no water ofcourse!) and we put a bunch of blankets in it. When I came home today, she had made a nest with the blankets! Its so cute, and her instincts are defintely kicking in, that the puppies are comeing soon! Another thing to add, im sure your partner already knows this, from the cows and stuff, but sometimes the dog has trouble opening the sacks, and you might have to help with that. But the dog will take care of everything else. They know. And will eat alll the yummy stuff.... eck! But no mess, right? Last thing, you should know how many puppies there are so you know if there is another coming. Because if there is another one in there and its not coming out, and its been a while, you would need to take her to the vet. And if you didnt know there was another, that won't be good. Well I hope this helped! And good luck with your puppies!! =)

If the puppies have parvo then no, the shelter will not take care of them. They will be humanely euthanized.

Please call ahead and let them know you are bringing the pups so they can be prepared and direct you what to do.

I also recommend a very generous donation to the shelter. This shouldn't have been their problem, donate every dollar you can.

NO shelter will take even a single pup that has parvo, let alone an entire litter. Take them to the vet, and make sure they're aware that you suspect parvo so they can be kept away from the other animals. Not clear on if you bred them or not, but if you did, it's your responsibility to care for them

ETA: Carolina are you freaking serious??? If in fact this litter was bred by her, and thinks that now dumping all parvo-infected 11 of them at a shelter is acceptable, and you think it's her right???? You're the one with her head so far up her @ss that surgical removal wouldn't even be an option

If you take your puppies to a shelter they will be destroyed. Many shelters don't have the resources to take care of 11 parvo infected puppies.

ADD: I second Animal Artwork & The Brat. If there is a outbreak of parvo in the shelter they destroy every dog and cannot accept any new dogs for a long time

Not making assumptions but I will say this if this entire litter has parvo because of your failure as an owner I sincerely hope there is a bit fat load of Karmic justice in store for you.

That being said with a litter that large depending on where you take them one of two things will happen - They will be taken in treated and split to various foster homes IF they don't have parvo.

IF they have parvo no shelter has the time or money to spend on pups that still have a chance of dying and they will be PTS. Let alone deal with the fact they will infect OTHER animals.

Mauve- If her first idea was to take the litter to the shelter do you really think she has the funds to take all 11 of these pups to the vet and treat them?

  • More than likely they'll be destroyed. Most shelters don't have the resources to isolate and treat parvo cases.

Make sure you let them know immediately of your suspicions.Do not allow those dogs on the floor or benches of the place. When you get home either throw out blankets, boxes or cages that were used or wash in hot soapy bleach water.

As for their future they will be tested and it will depend on the resources the shelter has in keeping them alive. I would imagine ones with hope, will be put in foster homes where someone will provide round the hour care for them.
