Education, GHG emissions and voting?
If US citizens were required to have a minimum education, such as an associate degree from a recognized university in order to cast their vote in an election would-
-Public healthcare already be in place
-Marijuana possession be legal
-Handguns be illegal
-The prison population be drastically lower
-GHG emission be declining right now
-The Iraq war V2.0 have happened
Sorry I not picking on the United States, I'm using you as an example.
This question is being asked under "politics", "law and ethics" and "global warming" categories
The reactionary responses are quite interesting and that to some extent emphasises my point.
People with a degree tend to think critically and independently better than those who choose not to seek a higher education, it’s what they are trained to do. How many put the obvious clue together, marijuana laws and prison population. Rather than think many just reacted.
A few interesting comments found in all three places this question was asked:
“Marxism is nothing but a fantasy and doesn't work.”
I’m not even sure how this even attempts to answer the question.
“Oh yeah trying taking my handgun....please” and
“Looking at what happened in Canada, it didn't do anything for the murder rate.”
The murder rate by firearms of all types in Canada is one eighth per capita than that of the US, but why look up the facts when you can just react. http://www.nationmaster.com/index.php
“The poor and uneducated that are mostly for Healthcare. So on that it would not even be on the list for educated people.”
If this person investigated they would find that in a world of globalisation a worker with public healthcare is more competitive than one where the company must supply the insurance.
“No-one would be worried about that, because a well-educated electorate would have followed the science, read the "Climategate" emails scandal, and know that anthropogenic climate change is a politically motivated myth.”
No comment need on that load of tripe.
I don’t necessarily support allowing only educated people to vote, yet.
But when we start seeing this

I have to wonder if there will be some sort of minimum standard needed in the near future.

It's hard to say. I mean, there are *a lot* of people with some sort of college degree who still oppose these measures. Just look at all the meteorologists and geologists who believe AGW is wrong, for example. They not only have a college degree, but in a scientific field which is somewhat relevant.
Unfortunately in the USA, politics tends to trump logic and intelligence. So I'm going to guess that the answer to most of your questions is no.
*edit* among the many hilariously wrong statements made by jim is this one - "Socialism was a failed experiment."
There are many countries which currently utilize some degree of socialism. Venezuela, Bolivia, and Ecuador are some of the more hardcore examples. Many countries have universal health care systems. Even the USA has medicare and social security.

>> Public healthcare already be in place <<
No. Reason being is that students in many majors (specifically those with a "business" orientation, and this is very much a business-run society) are brainwashed with various dehumanizing exercises, in order to purge them of their innate sense of compassion and fairness. The example which immediately comes to mind is "Boat Problem," the goal of which is to condition students to be willing to discard the "least fit" human beings.
>> Marijuana possession be legal <<
Most likely, though I fail to see how this would be a good thing. Entire societies have been destroyed by drugs; perhaps if you were educated, rather than just schooled, you would know that.
>> Handguns be illegal <<
Again, most likely. And again, I don't think stripping individuals of their inalienable right to self-defense would be a good thing.
>> The prison population be drastically lower <<
Doubtful, for the same reasons as why wouldn't have public healthcare. Actually, I'm very much inclined to think that the MBA degenerates would have us even further on the road to neo-feudalism with a much greater degree of prison privatization. The private prison racketeers would then lobby government to pass even more draconian sentencing laws, resulting in an ever-expanding prison population.
>> GHG emission be declining right now <<
Perhaps, perhaps not. But if they were, it would almost certainly be taken out of the living standards of the blue collar second-class citizens/serfs. The only way to have declining GHG emissions without a similar decline in living standards for the lower 90% or so of family income-earners is through development of nuclear energy, and many campuses are hotbeds of anti-nuclear activity.
>> The Iraq war V2.0 have happened <<
No reason at all to think so.

I'll go through them in order.
-Public health care already in place.
This is true. There is a lot of hidden information around this in the USA.
-Marijuana possession be legal.
Yes, since it actually lowers the number of smokers since they are allowed to come to treatment centers without getting arrested. The society, however must still frown upon it. Since the supply chains are exposed, it eliminates a lot of violence. See what happened in Poland, and then the reimplementation. The truth is, that nearly every smoker wants to quit but can't seek help from fear of getting in trouble under the law.
-Handguns be illegal.
I oppose this. This assumes that Democracy lasts forever and will NEVER have to be fought for again. Looking at what happened in Canada, it didn't do anything for the murder rate. You can't blame violence on guns. Canadians hold more guns per capita than Americans, yet have a very low rate of violent crime especially in comparison to them. Considering Steven Harper had something to do with it, and he has written statements of hating democracy and people... I really don't like the idea of someone like that getting a Majority government. it could go dictatorship, worst case scenario. It depends more on culture than education.
-The prison population would be lower.
I think this has more to do with private prisons. Honestly, when prison companies get to bribe judges into making sentences longer the system needs a change. Who knows what else they've been doing.
-GHG emission be declining right now
Your blaming this on one country right? Look North of the border... This has little relation to education. Look anywhere...
-The Iraq war V2.0 woudn't have happened.
True. It was all a scheme to get the oil since the begging. Same with Afghanistan, as a route to the oil-that the Chinese are getting right now peacefully. Imagine that. However, I can still see people deciding to go to war with an education. I'll start with Europe...
Where is this withholding the vote coming from? I say that you should be able to vote when your 14, since by then your beginning to think independently from your parents, usually. This is a stupid idea. People died for democracy. They will again. Sure education is good. But where is this idea that people shouldn't vote coming from? When you start there, where do you stop? That's going against the foundations of democracy.

its likely there would be no change.
you seem to be operating under the common misconception that education can increase an individuals IQ or intelligence when in fact nearly all research done on the subject clearly indicates heredity, birth weight & nutrition in the early formative years are the dominant intelligence determining factors.
social indoctrination as in schools obviously has a major influence in forming young peoples attitudes but it wont raise anyone's IQ.
if an individuals intelligence quotient is 100 at age 6 it will still be 100 +/- 10 after 20 years of education.
lets not forget that in 1939 Germany was by far the most highly educated country in the world but that didn't prevent tragic political mistakes from being made.

Yes. Unfortunately all of those things would be true.
Our education system is infested with left-leaning, politically correct teachers who, for the last couple of generations, have turned students into sheeple who are incapable of independent thought.
While there is nothing wrong with public health care or marijuana, there is room for debate about both of them. The same holds true for handguns and prisons.
We know now that much of the science is apparently fraudulent man-made global warming is in serious doubt. And, whether the Iraq war is a good or bad thing is open to discussion.
Unfortunately our education system does not allow for critical thinking on any social issues. There is no room for debate; only a knee-jerk liberal response.
Fortunately the United States remains a democracy - much more so than Europe, by the way - so the probability of having to qualify to vote remains low. Hopefully things will stay this way because the common sense of ordinary folks (who pay taxes and have a right to a say) is a factor in the country's decision-making processes.
Left-leaning social engineers, who believe they somehow know better how ordinary people should think, vote and live, have a way to go yet before they completely take over. The world has seen several experiments in totalitarianism. They always fail.

utopia is the word, but since i have seen many moron with university degree that we might be in a worst position then now.
Common sense is not an aquire trait it is a gift that some very brilliand man dont even grasp. an some low level education man masters.
since it's supposed to be the elite that are at the head of state i believe we wouldn't gain anything

Firstly Gwen, you are not a US citizen, but a Canadian socialist, secondly, citizens need an education in real science, not your type of science of agenda and social engineering of the institution. Alarmists are the uneducated and if you knew science you would agree.
- JimZLv 71 decade ago
You can't force people to learn. God Knows I have tried but alarmists simply won't listen.
Your view that education equals socialism is without merit. The educated actually learn from history.
Socialism was a failed experiment.
Marxism is nothing but a fantasy and doesn't work.
Washington DC is a good example of where handguns are illegal. It is probably the most danerous city in the US. The criminals know they are pretty safe and the citizens are helpless.
You blame the US for the Iraq war. If you bother to learn about history, you might realize that America sent it's soldiers into Iraq because the invaded another country, Kuwait. Iraq had killed thosands of their own citizens with nerve gas. They attempted to build nuclear weapons but Israel stopped them. The US is a force of good in the world. Leftists attempts to rewrite that history get old fast.

All due respect, the premise behind this question is really silly. If you withhold the vote from anyone without a degree, how will that decrease crime levels?
You're basically saying to anyone who doesn't have a degree "you're too stupid to have a legitimate say in what happens". So who would be surprised when those people come to the conclusion that since society doesn't care what the think, they don't care what society thinks.
Besides, whatever happened to "no taxation without representation"? Don't you guys believe in that anymore? Or are you proposing that those without a degree, and therefore the vote, would be exempt from paying taxes?
