My tax disc got sent to my old address and now its lost! What can i do?

When i re-taxed my car i thought i could get it forwarded on but it turns out that the people living at my old address have binned it! i still havn't changed my address so can't even re order it!

Also, whats the penalty for not displaying a current tax disc?

Penalty for not displaying is pretty minimal. Your car will not be scrapped as it is in fact taxed.

The penalty for not advising the DVLA of a change of address is a £1000 fine.

You will also get a £1000 fine for not changing the address on your driving license.

If I were you I would get it done asap and then apply for a duplicate tax disc.

As Julia has said contact the DVLA and explain it to them, although you will not be displaying a current tax disc your car will be shown to have valid tax. If you are stopped the Police can check this is correct.

You only commit a traffic offence when no tax disc is shown, having an old one takes the onus off the Police and gives it to the DVLA.

You can report the matter to the local police who will take details and then you can get a form (V20) from the Post Office for a replacement tax disc and you need to send it along with your log book/registration document (V5) to your local DVLA office. The cost of a replacement tax disc is currently £7.

  • the penalty - well on the tv ads its crushing your car... or a £200 fine.

i would do ur best to not use the car (use public transport if u can) send off ur v5 with the address changes asap and u get it back in a few days. then get hold of the tax disc people and see if u can get a new one sent to you!

Get a new one the Post Office and then phone the DVLA for a V33 - include a letter explaining, if you don't it will automatically be rejected, causing inconvenience for your stupid mistake.

    Or

Apply for one using a V20 and pay £7 for a duplicate.

Send off your V5C to update your address.

You need to tell them your new address! Penalty is a year's tax plus costs plus points on your licence - that's the minimum, you could end up losing your car.

...and there's also a £1,000 fine for not letting the D.V.L.A. know that you had changed your address...
