If a person opens your mail without permission and you press charges against this person, what would be the mo?
A person opened my deceased husbands mail I pressed charges the court wants me to place a $ value on damages. Don't know what to ask for.

You would have to say how they opened the mail. MO means modus operandi. Loosely translated to method of operation. It's a way of linking numerous crimes to one suspect. Criminals are like everybody else, they tend to do things a certain way. Some burglars kick doors down, some break out windows, some pry doors open with a crow bar. Each of those is an MO. The MO would be the method in which the person opened the mail. Which really wouldn't apply in a case like this.

You can't press charges. The government presses charges.
You go to the post office, ask to speak to a postal inspector (The Post Office's own police department) and make a report. Then it's out of your hands.

Tampering with federal mail. It's a felony.

if the mail has been delivered to its intended address the post office has no more jurisdiction anyone at that address can open the mail
