How do I safely erase my Mac?

I can tell my iMac is getting a little slow..I want to back up and erase it and do a clean install of Leopard. What is the safest and best way to do this?

you will need to back up your imac on an external drive in time machine when you are done with that go into your applications folder then utilities then disk utility click on macintosh HD then the erase tab
then click erase free space hope this helps
