It depends on what you are wanting to do with it. It also depends on what years you are looking at. In a nutshell the Chevy is going to be peppier around town, have a more comfortable interior and a smoother ride. The down side to them is that they are plagued with front-end problems, and are arguably not as durable as the dodge when worked hard. If you were going to be pulling something like a travel trailer occasionally, I would choose the Chevy.

Now the Dodge is going to tow much better, it will feel more sure footed, have more usable power under load, and will return better fuel economy. They are not nearly as comfortable, and they lack a lot of the creature comforts that you can get on the Chevy. They do use a solid axle front-end which is more durable for heavy-duty use than the IFS of the Chevy. If you were going to be towing heavy loads daily or be using the truck to make money, I would choose the Dodge.

For performance, they are about tied. There are guys getting CRAZY power out of the duramax trucks without much more than a tune, an intake, and an exhaust. However the duramax is a "light duty" diesel, where the B-series cummins is classified as a "medium duty" diesel engine. The cummins will be cheaper to make large amounts of power out of, and will hold up better with crazy high power numbers. But the duramax is easier to get power out of with inexpensive bolt on mods.

All of that being said, I am a Ford guy. I will not try to convince you to buy a Ford, because that is not the question that you asked. I think all of the big-3 make one hell of a truck. I have diesel fuel in my blood, and I'll tell you, once you catch your first smell of diesel smoke, you won't care what engine it is coming out of. I've tried to be as unbiased as I can, and I hope you enjoy whatever truck you end up buying. I don't think you can really go wrong.

By the way, please do yourself a favor and make your first modification a set of gauges. Pyrometer, Boost, and Trans Temp. before any power mods, NO EXCEPTIONS. When you start tuning your engine you need to be aware of what it is doing.

I have alwayse been a dodge man, but I gotta say the durramax is a grat truck. The pros: great intirrior, power, and it will run till you die. The cons: you cant get it in a manual. I like my cummins. Its cheaper to purchase, and run. Also, you have the manual tranny, not the allison auto. The cons: dodge is sure not known for there good electronics.

Cummins is the better diesel period. If it's gonne have to work hard, it's the way to go.

leave those diesels alone or you will end up with a pile of iron/both are good trucks/diesels dont like you playing with their wastegates
