Is it normal for your tooth to hurt after a crown gets put on?
I had a dental onlay put on about 6 months ago that failed. The new dentist decided that a root canal was already needed before the onlay was done.
He did the root canal, then waited about two weeks. All the sensitivity from the root canal went away in that time.
Today he put on the "mini crown" as he called it. Basically he redid the entire onlay (covering about 2/3 of the side of my tooth) plus the middle hole he made for the root canal.
My tooth hurts so much now, and the gums around it hurt. I can understand that cause a little cement got between teeth and he had to saw it out so I could floss and that hurt a little.
Will this pain go away? I don't like being a pill head, but this is one of those times that I really need an alieve so I took it.

I don't think that you have anything serious going on. Give the new crown a week or two and it should be fine. It is just sore from working on it. If it gets worse over the next few days it may need an adjustment of the bite so you can call the dentist. Good luck.

If the tooth has had a root canal there should not be any feeling what so ever. sounds like there could still be some nerve left in the tooth or it may have gotten re infected. I would call and have them take an x-ray. When we glue crowns on we have to clean all around the tooth REALLY well to make sure we dont leave any glue so it is normal for your gums to be sore for a day or so. But if you know its the tooth I would call your dental office.

the on-lay could also need more adjusting if there is a high spot. when you bite down if that tooth is the first to touch it needs to be adjusted. but also if there is cement still in between go back to have it removed the floss wont make it come out because by now the cement is fully set.

No. The soreness should fade. There's something wrong. Call that dentist for an appointment on an emergency basis.
