Vegetarian/gelatin problem! Help?
A few months ago I became a vegetarian. Prior to that, I had sleeping problems and had to take a melatonin supplement. The sleeping problems went away for a while, and now they're back. The melatonin I have contains gelatin or collagen, and I'm not sure what to do. I've tried teas and modified sleeping schedules, but melatonin is the only thing that helps. Are there any types of melatonin made with the seaweed gelatin? Or are there any other options?

I take melatonin regularly and mine has all natural ingredients. I get mine at Walmart but can't remember the brand name.. it may be Nature Made. Hope this helps!

I understand your problem. I had issues at first finding vegetarian vitamins and supplements.
There is a great brand called NOW that is vegan. They don't use gelatin, they use cellulose in place of it. They make about every kind of supplement known to man, including melatonin.
You can find these at most health food stores or online.

J, melatonin comes from animals, plants, and microbes. Don't try to make the OP feel like it's only animal based. OP, i'm pretty sure you can find melatonin in a vegetable based capsule. Here are two just as an example from the Vitamin Shoppe website.

I also take melatonin.
But it isn't in capsules it's a tablet.
So there are veggie friendly melatonin out there.
Check wal-mart.
I'm sure they have some.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for your question. It does interest me though that you can't sleep well. That is strange to me. Are you active? Normally if you aren't very active you can't sleep well. Do you watch a lot of tv? Are you really stressed or overworked?? I dunno, seems strange. You should look for a supplement without gelatin if you want to keep taking medication to help you sleep I think...

when it comes to medication, i take what i need, most of my meds have gelatine, you dont get a choice , the nhs doesnt exactly care about veges, so i make allowances for health, i will not jeapordise my health again for my beliefs when i can be healthy and still be who i am
if you need the meds you take them if you can find a vege suppliment, take them instead
if not, i think its just what you have to do, its just one thing inlife we dont liek but have to do

Buy melatonin as a sub lingual at a naturopaths and put it into your own vegan capsules. You can buy the capsules at a health food store.

Go to a health food store. I am vegetarian. I don't care what is in the pills. It makes you sleep.
Use it. Sleep is precious. I am vegetarian. Sweet Dreams. I was thinking the same thing as you. I was reading about drops.
