There is a story from an old folk that when Francis Light eat the oreca seed (buah pinang) suddenly he felt giddy and head ache so he said penang instate of wright Malay word is pening. So from that day onward he named the island is Penang. But for the Malaysian they called Pulau Pinang. Ha ha ha ha ha

Hiya, it is an areca nut palm (known in Malay as pokok pinang), it is the pinang tree which and the state tree of penang.

Im not sure exactly why it is on the flag, I'de say it was generally a significant part of Penang (the areca nut palm) when the flag was designed so was placed as a centre for the flag, and definitly suitable with it being the tree of the state!

    I hope this helps!

The local name is pokok pinang which was probably from the Chinese[Cheng Ho ?] [bin lang] and from which the island got its name, probably the island was covered with the palm [maybe of a variety or species native to the island]

I know a bloke that swears up and down there are Coconuts in Britain, but they used them all up during the war in the infantry. They disguised their bagpipe noise with clacking coconut shells against each other.
