Question: Pete Rock & CL Smooth and The Pharcyde?

Both came out at the same time (early 90's) and both had the same # of notable LP's - 2.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "Mecca and the Soul Brother", "The Main Ingredient"

The Pharcyde - "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde", "Labcabincalifornia"

For each of the groups which was their better LP? For me its a no brainer, their debuts are significantly better than their follow up releases.....am I off base here? If you prefer their sophomore albums please explain why.

Update:

The Main Ingredient is a great album but its missing a T.R.O.Y. and a Straighten It Out. That's the main difference for me.

I liked Labcab(easier to type that eh bonnie?) but I think it fell short of Bizarre Ride in 3 main areas 1) consistency 2) it lacked the edge and quirkiness and 3) I really dug J-Swift's production over the more mellow Dilla.

    I prefer both sophomore releases.

I think The Main Ingredient was a far more mature and mellow outing from Pete Rock & CL. Only thing it's missing is T.R.O.Y. The shout out to ATCQ in the intro shows Pete's appreciation for the way jazz fused hip hop really took things to a new and exciting place for the genre, the beats are overall more polished and CL sounds more confident as an emcee on it. Mecca is an amazing album, don't get me wrong, but there are times when I listen to it and it takes me out of myself slightly because it hasn't aged so well in some places. The Main Ingredient doesn't have that problem.

As far as The Pharcyde goes, I just very slightly prefer the production of Labcabincalifornia. I hate typing it though!

Mecca and the Soul Brother: Production-wise, they're both pretty even, but The Main Ingredient was a step back lyrically.

Labcabincalifornia. It had more purposeful songs, and no disrespect to J-Swift, but J Dilla was an upgrade.

I preferred Mecca & The Soul Brother for the main reason that it had T.R.O.Y, IMO the best produced hip hop song ever and one of my favourites.

And for Pharcyde i liked Bizarre Ride II. IMO its their best album as its their funniest (no joke)
