What Types Of Grants Are Available ?
I Am a 43 year old mother of a 7 year old boy. I am single, as my husband abandoned us here in San Diego over 3 years ago. I Am now attending UEI in San Diego, and have been granted the Pell grant, however they say that I will not be in charge of the money, and that all of the 5350.00 will go to the school as part of my tuition Now I am faced with having no income, and no resources to aid me in supporting my family. Anyone know of any grants geared to meet the criteria of these listed above?

I have not heard of any grants for living expenses. There are several grants that are given through financial aid, obviously you received the big one. No financial aid is every disbursed to the student, it always goes first to the school to pay tuition and fees, then any refund is sent to the student. There are government services available that you may qualify for: rent assistance (section-8, government housing), food stamps, state health insurance, TANF or cash assistance, energy assistance, daycare assistance, etc. Did you ask for work study when you filled out your fafsa? If not, speak to a financial aid adviser about campus jobs that you could apply for. It's not much, especially for a single parent, but until you can find other employment it is money. Good luck to you!

I can totally relate. I'm a 42 year old single mom with 3 teenage boys. I am working full-time and started back to school last fall. I received the Pell and also took out student loans. Even though I work full-time I do not make enough to support us totally and the boys father is out of work so there is no support. That is where the student loans come in. I will be using those to pay for living expenses as long as I need to. I didn't want to have to take out loans if I didn't have to but, sometimes circumstances require us to do things we don't want to do. Knowing in the end I am making a better life for myself & my children makes it worth it.
Good luck!
Patty
