Should we really give the people what they want?

I really believe in democracy but when I look at California, a state heavily influenced by direct democracy through ballot initiatives, I start to doubt if people in modern society have the time to make informed decisions.

The initiative process, like just about everything else has been taken over by corporate interests. Corporations can afford to pay people to collect large numbers of signatures. They stack the ballots with mountains of initiatives designed to serve their interests and you're right. Who has the time to wade through all that to make informed decisions. And who can become informed when the people who design the initiatives and campaign for them work very hard to make sure the people who vote don't understand them?

If you ask me what I want I'll tell you I want a Democracy that isn't sold to the highest bidder and in which an informed electorate is a genuine possibility.

To begin with, we shouldn't "give" anything to ANYBODY. The whole philosophy of the American experiment is to maintain a system wherein anyone who's capable of bettering themselves has the freedom to do so. Keep in mind that America is not a "democracy" and never was nor was it meant to be. America is a "Republic" and it is that fact that made us the most envied nation on earth and the most desired destination of emigrants from every corner of the world. It is our sacred duty to nurture and maintain that system and never allow it to decay into a so-called democracy; in order that the generations following us will have the same unprecedented freedom to develop into their own highest attainment we were given by the blood and life sacrifices of our forebears. Anyone who thinks the nation "owes" them something does not deserve our support and protection, they deserve our contempt, let them go to wherever a government and people are willing to support them.

    No.

We should never give one person what he/she wants if it is against the best interests of our country...

...however, we should give the high majority of people what they want and need to survive in this corrupt capitalist system, indeed.

You either give people what they want, and the country goes to the dogs; or you don't, until they revolt and the country really goes to the dogs.
