I can't comment directly on Michigan but just the fact that you have a mental illness doesn't exclude you from obtaining a CCW permit. In most states the only reason having a mental illness would exclude you from having a permit would be if you had a long history of recorded police contact due to your illness or had been involuntary committed to a psychiatric facility. Basically being a generally unstable person.

I live in Alabama and have Bipolar Disorder but am functioning at a normal level and have always been compliant with my meds. I could quite easily get a CCW permit if I wanted/needed one because I've never been involuntarily committed and have never had any police contact due to my illness. Basically, in our cases, our medical history is none of the state's business. OCD is a pretty dumb reason to deny someone a CCW anyway.

A police officer I know (who knows my mental health history which includes two suicide attempts as a teenager) actually recommended I get some type of weapon because I just took a job at a financial services company in a bad part of town as the job requires me to transport large sums of money on a regular basis. He suggested a small handgun or a taser. I think I'll go with the Taser because I'm a MAJOR klutz and don't want to accidentally injure myself, although I do keep a 20 gauge shotgun at home for personal protection. My dad is big into guns and at the worst part of my illness I lived in a house full of loaded ones.

    Good luck!
