where can I buy cost effective mesh for screen printing?
I am looking to make a screen print such as the ones here: http://community.livejournal.com/craftgrrl/3674467... and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee_8IMx0uMo
I know how to make the frame etc I just cant find where to buy the mesh (in the uk) and what I can use for the mesh. I am looking for any ideas or knowledge on what can be used for the mesh and if possible where to pick it up.
Many thanks :)

Panty hose will not work well as it will tend to stretch and warp when running the squeegee over it. I hate the term "cost effective" because, while the user actually means "cheap," what it suggests is that for some, only the best product will do when anything less won't work as well, while, for someone else, the cheaper product won't produce a good result, it is used only because it was more affordable.
The BEST material to use is the material that is designed to do the job right. While current silk screens no longer use real silk, you can purchase rolls of the newer, nylon mesh silk screen material at most major art and craft supply stores.
Look in your local telephone directory for "Art Supplies" and then call around to see who carries it. Other wise, look up Dick Blick's website for online ordering.

Cost effective should be based on fine quality, otherwise, you get cheap printing mesh, however you cannot get the printing effects expected. SHARE is the factory producing polyester printing mesh from 10T-165T, as we produce and supply directly to clients, so the price is competitive, you can visit our website: www.sharefilters.com for more information.

I remember hearing from somewhere that pantyhose works great. Just make it tight and be careful not to tear it or cause "runs" in the fabric. I'm not sure how many prints it could handle before wearing out, though.
You shouldn't have a problem finding it in your local department stores :)
If you really want "the good stuff", I'm sure there are some online art stores that you could buy from. Here's a UK based online art store that sells screen mesh:

The REAL Answer is it depends on how many photos or images you take and how often -- me, I like being creative with my Digital SLR -- so for me, having a Photo Printer in my home is worth it for me. If you use your digital camera rarely -- then going to the Local Photo Processing Place may end up more cost effective for you.
