Why are their SO MANY Boxing Associations (WBA, WBO, WBC, IBF)?

What is the point of having four boxing Associations???

You've got,...

1. WBA

2. WBC

3. WBO

4. IBF

But,...WHY???

Why have 4 organizations instead of ONE? Why have four belts for every weight division instead of ONE???

I have been told that it has to do with money, but how do they make more money this way??? Wouldn't it be more profitable to only have ONE organization with ONE belt per weight division??? Wouldn't that be better, and more lucrative for the sport of Boxing???

Basically, I have SEVEN questions,...

Here are my questions,...

1. Why are there so MANY Boxing Associations??? ( How does this make more money )

2. Is any organization "better" than another,...Like as an example,... does the WBO belt mean more than the WBC belt??? Which organization is the MOST prestigious and which is least???

3. When did all these different organizations spring up???

4. Why did they spring up???

5. Which was first AND Which was last??? (Does any one know the order they came in)

6. What EXACTLY is it that these organizations DO??? How would it compare to MMA, where each company has fighters under contracts, and each company has one belt per weight class,...like UFC, Pride, Strike force, etc,.... Is it like that??? How does it work???

7. Would it ever be possible to unify the four organizations, so their could be ONE Belt per weight class, or are they totally separate company's that would never merge???

I would REALLY appreciate your information on these 7 questions!!!

    1. Many would just thought "Hey we start out own boxing organization!", others did because they were apart of other boxing organizations and had disagreements so they started their organization. In retrospect its actually kind of childish. It makes more money since each of them have their own organization and if a boxer is willing to pay their sanctioning fee, then they're willing to give them the title of a "world champion".

    2. Different people have different interpretations of them, some people like the WBA since it's the oldest and some people like the WBC because its a more popular organization. But when you're an up and coming boxer, you don't care for preference, a title is a title.

    3. The WBA started out as the National Boxing Association in 1921 and later on came to be the World Boxing Association. The WBC then came in 1963 and was the first organization reduce fights to a 12 round max limit and went bankrupt in 2004 after a lawsuit but eventually survived. Then came the IBF in 1983 where a man who didn't get elected to become president of the WBA got fed up and some people followed him along and formed a new world organization. The IBF used to be the USBA, a regional boxing organization but transformed into the IBF in '83. Then came the WBO (which some still hold as a minor title) in 1988 after some people got fed up with the WBA at the '88 convention and started their own organization.

    4. Mostly for business reasons, they wanna make their own rules and money.

    5. WBA in 1921, WBC in 1963, IBF in 1983, WBO in 1988.

    6. It's different from MMA, in MMA, not only do Strikeforce, UFC, Pride, etc act as MMA organizations but also as promoters, in boxing their are promoters and then they are boxing organizations...just imagine if instead of WBA WBO champs, you had Golden Boy champs and Top Rank champs, Don King champs.

    7. I DOUBT IT! The thing is everyone has different ideas and everyone wants their own money. They have been lenient in recent years about unification matches, but the only time they agree on something is because it'll benefit them financially and not necessarily benefit the sport. They probably never merge.

The list goes on....World Boxing Union, WB Federation, International Boxing Organization, IBAssociation, IBCouncil, EBF.

While not technically an organization, The Ring Magazine awards fighters titles for each weight class and their are usually the most legit champ, the prob is they can't force fighters to fight and have them face the best, but their ratings are the most accurate and if you look at the divisions that have holders, they're usually the true best fighter in that division.

the only difference really is the names. WBA world boxing association, WBC world boxing council, IBF international boxing federation, WBO world boxing organization..They all rate fighters in the different weight classes and they each have there own "world champion". When a fighter has all the belts, mainly WBA,WBC,and IBF(these three are the main ones) they are known as the undisputed champion. Also, the two fighters that fight in a title fight pay sanctioning fees for that organization. Hardcore fans don't pay too much attention to who holds the belts, because now-a-days they don't mean as much as they used to. A lot of the criticism boxing gets is because of all the different organizations and different weight classes they oraganize. It can make it too complicated for new fans. There is also evidence that some boxers get moved up in the rankings by bribing there way there(there promoters do). A long running joke is that Don King really is the president of the WBA. The WBA is ridiculous because they can have two world champions in the same weight class. If a fighter is the undisputed champ in a weight class, they anoint him super champion, and then have a world champion, its a joke. Having a belt is just a good way to get paid, but not recognized as the real world champ in the fans eyes. My advice is to get the Ring magazine, there rankings and there world champ is as legit as it gets. there's so much more about the different bodies but I would be typeing forever...

Personally, I don't see a reason to have more than one organization. Most combat sports simply have government sanctioning organizations with set rules. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a single organization. Why not just have an international charter between nations with universal rules, and all fighters allowed to fight for any promotion as long as they have a license in a charted country?

It would clear up alot of red tape. Do away with the multiple private sanctioning bodies and have one controlled by a supernational public agency.

There is ONE SIMPLE ANSWER to your 7 questions. You see, boxing has become such a huge money-making business so that people come up with all these boxing orgs so that they can have their own champs and promote championship fights which obviously equate to big bucks.

  • 1 decade ago

Surely, each of these organizations has its own good reason for being. The bottom line is they're all making some money out of boxing.

WHY MAKE ONE, WHEN YOU CAN MAKE FOUR? thats why your not a buisness man.

just imagine a heavyweight champ, or any weightclass champ for that matter. and imagine how many times he would have to fight to defend his title... your gonna have HUNDREDS of contenders below him fighting for that belt! its gonna be impossible to keep up with that demand.

you got presidents, vice presidents chairmans managers commisioners in EVERY organization.. if there were only ONE, then everyone else dont got a job! MONEY MONEY MONEY SON...

there are a millions reason why. but i dont have the tym to write em down... i gave you enough info to figure it out..
