Is there a DIY moving cost calculator? Does anyone have moving cost advice or experience?
I'm moving from a small town in the lower peninsula of Michigan to the outskirts of Denver, Colorado. While I'm anxious to get going and move as soon as possible, I want to make sure that I will have enough money to make ends meet. I've searched the internet for a cost calculator that could give me rough numbers regarding moving and saving, but nothing has really helped me out.
I plan to move everything I have in my hatchback since I don't have any furniture or appliances that need to be moved. I have a ball park number as to how much that will cost me, but I'm curious how much I should have saved up before I leave. How many months worth of rent should I have? Am I safe with four months worth?
Any and all advice is welcome. I appreciate your input. ;)
I forgot to include that I am in my early 20s and don't need to worry about selling a house or caring for kids. I'm just looking for an approximate number so I can care for myself before I start to bring in a paycheck.

If you don't have a job lined up, it might be rough depending on your field of employment. If you are working in the service sector, I would save up more months (about 6) because there is more competition and possibly less pay. If you are doing something else, like an office job, don't wait to move to send out resumes! 4 months is probably sufficient, but make sure that is 4 months rent in addition to a security deposit and moving in costs (because your new place won't have any food ($200) or amenities other then what's in your car, and there are sometimes activation fees for starting utilities.)
Have you reviewed a cost of living calculator as well? You may have to make more if you are moving to an area that cost more to live in.
I really like this one because it breaks everything down. It was fairly accurate too. http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/savings/moving...
When considering driving, calculate in motels and food. I find that folks almost always underestimated these costs. Calculate for 70 dollar motels (because sometimes you have no choice, or you can't make it to the one you though you could) and 40 dollars a day for food (fast food). Gas depends on your car, but it will get worse gas mileage fully loaded with stuff. It may seem high, but If you have extra, it's just more cushion.
Good luck!

Moving companies charge WAY more than $1000, especially to move that far. It is more cost efficient to move yourself.
