How do I get rid of this fake anti-virus?
My friend's netbook got a rouge anti-virus program that has stopped her from opening any programs and also stops me from booting in safe mode to get rid of it with mbam. There is no system restore point before the virus infected the computer, so that isn't an option either. (Note, I have to be lucky and move fast to open a program before the virus processes begin) SO now I have no clue what to do. The computer is running Windows XP

If you can't open any programs at all, then consider telling your parents about it (if you're a minor at least) and let them contact someone experienced who can restart your computer in a cleaned out mode or just reset your computer. This will remove everything that was once put onto your computer (like games, pictures, etc) so consider this to be your back-up plan.
Next time you should consider to use:
AVG (free version) and/or Avast.
These are decent programs that help track down viruses on your computer.
Malware Bytes (an anti-malware program).
To track down and remove 'malware', that's the virus that fills your computer with advertisements.
Hijack This.
If things get really bad and none of your programs can find a virus but you still have problems (like a slow computer for an example). Just run that program, create a log, post it on a PC Help Forum, and an experienced person will help you.

try command prompt mode.
u must download, install, update and run a free antivirus first - http://free.avg.com/ww-en/download-avg-anti-virus-... comes to mind (AVG). Alternatives are Avast! and Avira, maybe others I do not know of.
You might have malware (not necessarily captured by the AV) on your computer. Try a free software like SpyBot S&D or Malwarebytes Anti-malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org)./ Again, install, update and run to clean any malware/spyware etc.
do the downloads on a different computer if you cannot complete on this one.
If this worked fine, you might want to stay protected - make sure to keep your AV software up-to-date and the same for the anti-malware. Activate the firewall on your computer (in the Windows options), and you should be fine. You could try to get the full version of Malwarebytes Anti-malware for its IP blocker and scheduled scans/updates options (you can purchase it as a one-time-fee, get a Malwarebytes coupon code shared by other users from http://news.dtcdeals.com/malwarebytes-coupon-code to save at checkout).
Worst case scenario, you will need to reinstall the software on your laptop - the original docs should guide you through that. Good luck!
