Being a Land Rover, it is ALWAYS 4wd! The small gear stick is to allow you to choose between high & low ratio & it allows you to use the Diff-Lock by pushing the stick to one side.

Source(s): I own a Land Rover Freelander and drive both Defenders & Disco's at work, regularly.

Its always 4 wheel drive. you can however select high or low ratio. You should only need low ratio when off road or very icy hills that are not two long. I have a series 3 Landrover and its only the last 100 meters of my drive home that I use low ratio (and thats only when its snowing).
