What is your suggestion for a guitar amp?
I've been looking for a new guitar amp recently, but I'm not entirely sure what would fit my needs best. I listen to and play a wide variety of music (ranging from John Mayer to Amon Amarth), so I want something that can deliver good tones not only with a clean tone, but also with light, medium, and heavy distortion. I'm not too concerned about the size of the amp, and if at all possible, I need something for less than $250.
Note that I would also strongly prefer a combo amp

In that price range you are limited to a solid state combo amp. I would recommend something with at least 50 watts and a 12" speaker. This way you will be able to play with a band. There are so many manufacturers that you will really have to go to your local music stores and try as many as possible. You will find that, in this price range, all amps are very similar in sound and features. Some have built in effects, others have more power. Start with the better known brands and keep searching until you find one that has the sound and features that you need. Check out Fender, Marshall, Line 6, Peavey, Bugera (one of the few tube amps in this price range), Raven, Behringer, etc.
