Companies pay the website owner to advertise on their page. First they buy a set number of times their ad will be shown, these are called "impressions". There are numerous cost models that can apply. Sometimes you pay a cheap amount for certain number of impressions, but have a larger amount to pay for each time the ad was actually clicked. Sometimes your ad will run endless number of times but you'll only be charged each time the ad is shown to a different user, these are called "uniques". Sometimes, more rarely, you can purchase unlimited ad serving for a set period of time, say 1mos. A common cost model is called CPM, which stand for "cost per thousand".

there are various ways to earn money online using a website. you can sell advertisements on your site, sell blogposts, links, etc. or you can sign up with some publisher program like google adsense, affiliate programs, or some CPA offers. possibility is endless. do some research on affiliate programs or CPA offers and you will learn a lot. thats where the real money is. i'm including couple of article links where you will get some detailed info

as said before the main thing is how much traffic that your website gets and also having a website that is popular which will increase the chances of someone clicking on an ad on your website and purchasing the product. which in turn generates money for you. for example google adsense will post ads on your site and if a customer purchases them from your site you get commission for that

Banners are copy and pasted from the affiliate network platform using html or javascript code. The advantages of text links is that you can pre sell the benefits of clicking the link whereas the banner ads have to sell themselves through creative images.
