"Joke site". That means that he can't defend on the basis of actual truth.
But their statement sounds odd. They would go after him for defamation (libel) not trademark violation.
Copyright is completely wrong, unless they were claiming that they owned the jokes in question.
Typically such violations, even if there were anything to it (which I doubt here) are dealt with by a "cease and desist" request. It sounds like this is what he's been given. If he desisted when requested, then I expect that there's nothing to the case. If they want to take it further, they have to prove that a joke site hurt their reputation. Hurt the KKK's reputation after decades of murder and terrorism? I doubt it.

Anybody can be sued for almost anything, but copyrighting a name doesn't necessarily give them the exclusive use of that name. There are "fair use" exceptions in copyright law. Furthur, to prevail for any monetary sums for infringment, the person doing the suing has to prove monetary damages. The person being sued generally has to have something worth going after. In other words, pretty damned unlikely.
