when do you know when to change it?

    You know you need to change it when it needs to be changed.

    Before that, you don't know when you might need to change it.

    It's not a regular maintenance item.

    It's job is to store gasoline vapors, so I'm pretty sure it's gonna smell like gas. LOL

    if your not smelling gas coming from it then leave it alone. if it has a gassy odor then it has been saturated and needs replacement.
