Vegan recipes....I'm not sure if I really know what vegan is?

I have a friend who is Vegan, and I'm not sure I quite understand what a Vegan excludes in their diet. Her birthday is coming up, and her family has asked me to bake her a birthday cake...please, I need a good, tried and true recipe!

Also, any info on Vegan diet would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Vegans do not consume *any* animal products--no meats, eggs, dairy, honey, animal-based gelatin or fats.

Fortunately, there are a lot of good animal-free substitutes available nowadays, and vegan baking/cooking is quite popular. I HIGHLY recommend the book 'Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World' by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero. It has fast become my favorite cookbook, and I have charmed vegans & non-vegans alike with their recipes. The recipes are all cupcakes, but I've had friends convert them into regular cakes as well.

You can check out the book at Amazon (many of the recipes can also be found online):

The authors have written a number of other books on baking & cooking, and contribute to the Post-Punk Kitchen website:

Here is the recipe for the Golden Vanilla Cupcakes (I prefer the oil variation):

I believe you can use one batch of batter to make a 9" round cake, though you would probably have to increase the cooking time to around 30 min. You can make a layer cake by baking 2 cakes and assembling them with vegan buttercream icing:

I've had some very tasty vegan cupcakes so making a vegan cake can't be that much different.

Just google "vegan cakes" and see what comes up. Try vegweb as well.

try this website or buy the book "Idiot's Vegan cooking, which i highly recomend

its only vegan if it does have ANYTHING from animals, that includes meats, dairy products, eggs, and even fats and additives that come from animals (very picky, i know)

No Meat or eggs. You're gonna have to figure out how to make a cake with no eggs.
