Claiming a dependent on annual taxes.?

My mom did her taxes today, and she was told that she could no longer claim me as a dependent. I'm 17, have no job, and will be attending college next year. We live in California and both of my parents work. I'm their only son. Under which criteria am I no longer considered a dependent of my parents?

She was told wrong. She can claim you at least until age 18.

You are still considered a dependent of your parents. What has changed is that your parents will no longer received the Child Tax Credit for you. That ends when a child turns 17.
