Getting my chihuahua spade .Am I getting ripped off by my vet?
Ive had some issues with my vet in the past. Decided not to change vets just because he has been our vet for years. Now, a new issue has come up.I have a 7 month old chihuahua. I had her at the vet and asked them for a price to have her spayed. They gave me a price in writting of $124.00. So, as the economy is bad right now and all, I decided I could afford this. Today was the big day. Today , they gave me a bill of $242.00. No complications. Anyone out there had a dog spayed lately? what did your vet charge you. Oh, she weighs 6 pounds

i understand this issue, he/she could have just stated you the price for a routine spay with out all the other charges of drugs used, perishable supplies used, tools, physical labor of him, is tech or assistant that helped him, the stay of your pet... and so on. he/she could also be charging for the size of the animal, smaller pets are harder to do seeing there is a lot more crammed inside of a min pin vs a great Dane.
a good vet will charge big $$ for a spay, b/c they will try not to make your pet look like she had anything done, it is possible.
you should go back and ask why he/she charge you for more than what they quoted, but this could be the reason.
hope this helps

I couldn't imagine that it would cost 242 dollars to spay a chihuahua. If you still have the original spay quote then take it and the bill down there and tell them that the amount they are charging you is not what they agreed to. Did they keep your dog overnight? If so they may have not added the charge of kenneling your dog for the night. The spay for my dog was much cheaper but I live in a poor area. It cost me $60 for a 14 pound dog.

The $124 you were quoted was most likely just the cost of the spay itself. Next time ask for a quote for everything including presurgical blood work, fluids if required, Pain meds to go home on, and a buster collar that may be needed. The price you paid sounds pretty good actually. Most Spay's where I work cost about $100 more. Please ask in advance for the grand total. If this is not the case and you were quoted for the entire thing then you should complain to management. I doubt that's the case though since its such a drastic difference.

I had my Pomeranian spayed three years ago, she is oversized, weghed 11.8 pounds. The cost to spay her was $485, plus the mandatory exam the week before when I first got her- $100 ($50 exam + $50 new pet fee).
So really my total cost was $585
Your bill seems cheap.
My friend just had two kittens neutered at my vets, and her bill was $380.00 and this was for feral kittens she was having neutered and was going to release again!
So your bill seems pretty cheap compared to prices here in Southern California.
ADD: To the poster below its $700 for a horse castration where I live.

The spay for my dog was around that but then the bloodwork and such took it up to about $150. I didn't have to pay the $40 office visit because they had just seen her within the last 8 weeks. What were the other charges? Did you inquire? The only way to figure out if it was fair is to have the detail.

You mean spayed, and my vet charged $155 for my female Anna.
And that wasn't a reduced price, I know some people that have had to pay $210+30 for their dogs. To me you got off pretty good. Times are hard, even for vets, and people are struggling to make ends meet.
Any way the vet did write down the first price in writing so he should have followed true with this, its almost as good as a contract, seek legal action.

The hospital I work at charges almost $600 (I know, outrageous) because they are the only emergency hospital in the area.
If you have something in writing, I assume an estimate, you can show it to the vet. Sometimes the estimate will say something like, "this is only an estimate, there may be more charges accrued during the pet's stay due to certain circumstances" and then you can ask to see where the rest of the cost came from.

I can't compare in dollars, as I had my female dog spayed four years ago, and it cost about £175.
But I did pay the estimate, (no hidden charges) I would query the bill, and go to a different vet, If you have had issues in the past, and now there is another issue of trust, find another one, ask your doggy friends......

Check your estimate it may have only been for the price of the surgery and not included the drugs used to sedate her and to help control pain if that was included I would bring it to their attention they might reimburse some of it.
I know my vet charges $100 for a dog of that size.
Don't be afraid to change vets especially if you are having issues your vet should be someone you trust and feel comfortable bringing up any issues you have be it with your dogs health or your how they handle something.

You will need to have a good talk with the vet and ask why did they add $100 it might be fee or drugs added, with spaying i don't know... I would know if I had talk to your vet.
My dog got spayed for £130 in UK, she is a little dog
