What do I do? Special ed coordinator harassing me about homeschooled children.?
I am enrolling one of my children (who has CP) into public school. The special ed coordinater that has been handling it has been making rude and unnecessary comments about my other children who are being homeschooled. She has made comments about getting them enrolled in public school, and asked me if I was in special ed, too. (I have an IQ of 160 and was the valedictorian in my class.) I specifically told her that I didn't want my other children involved in this. I am only enrolling the one to make it easier for myself, and I think he will enjoy the extra attention.

Part of the issue is that the schools are given a budget of say, $10,000, for each child that is enrolled. When you home school your children, they don't get that money and they don't like it.
What I would do if it were me -- and it has been me -- is tell that coordinator that her comments are inappropriate and un-Constitutional. The courts have upheld a parent's right to homeschool their children for decades now.
Tell her that if she speaks her OPINION one more time, you are going to file a complaint with the school board against her for harassment, and move YOUR child to another school district and THEY will get the money for your baby, and not her school district. You'd be surprised how the idea of loss of money will make people be quiet.
If she still has comments to make, follow through and file a formal complaint with the school district, and then consider getting a lawyer from the home school legal defense fund (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called) to write her a letter threatening legal action if her subdued threats don't stop.
You've got the power, and the Constitution backs you 100%. Remind her of that.
Source(s): My daughter also has CP. The school system was so bad in the state that we lived that we actually picked up and move half way across the country just to give her a chance. The state I live in now offers partial home schooling so that if you wanted to have your kids home schooled for part of the year, you can do that at the state's expense. There's also a little boy in my son's class who is home schooled through the district three days a week. He attends school on Mondays and Thursday. Fabulous state I live in.
