A snow flake is simply a phase change of water, due to cooler temperatures. As the temperatures drop water cools, and freezes. Through the collision of water droplets and other snow flakes as it falls within a cloud, the snow flake will grow in size until the updrafts can no longer support the weight, and it falls to the surface.
