Do a lot of people write their own user scripts for Wikipedia?

What sorts of functionality do such user scripts typically add?

    User scripts for Wikipedia have probably been written by about 40 or 50 people. As there are over 6 billion people in the world, I would summarize the answer as, "No, not a lot of people write their own user scripts for Wikipedia."

    I don't know enough to write my own scripts, I just tend to import other people's.

    These scripts, from what I know, tend to add one of two types of things:

    1. Changes to the editing box, so that it looks different or there's more buttons, etc;

    2. More links to do things that would take longer manually, like fix vandalism/spelling, or move a page, or edit a particular subset of templates to a preset setting; or watch live changes to things on your watchlist.

    But this is just what's common, from what I've seen. Which is not much.
