Should I leave for my cruise from Miami or Port Canaveral?

I'm leaving for a cruise in either June or July but I have no clue which place I should leave from. I can either take a plane to Orlando and drive to Port Canaveral and leave to the Bahamas from there or I could take a plane to Miami and leave from Miami to the Bahamas. Which one would you recommend? Thank you.

Its just a cruise port. Either one is fine. I would pick the one that will end up costing you the least when everything is paid. So, add up the price of the cruise + the plane fare and go with the least expensive. Thats the way I do it!

    Hope I helped!

  • I have cruised out of both Port Canaveral and Miami many times. My advice would be to cruise out of Miami rather than Port Canaveral, unless you want to cruise on a specific ship. Port Canaveral has 4 cruise lines: Carnival, Disney, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. So, for example, if you want a Disney cruise or you want to cruise on RC's Freedom of the Seas then Port Canaveral is your only option. If you fly into Orlando you will be about 60 miles, or about an hour travel time from the port. You can get there by renting a car, getting transfers through the cruise line, or via a van service. There will be a substantial cost for either.

If you fly into Miami you will actually have the options of two cruise departure ports nearby, the Port of Miami, or the Port of Fort Lauderdale. Miami is closer but both are major departure ports with several cruise lines and many more ships and opportunities. The Port of Miami is a short taxi ride from the airport and the fare is set at about $25 per taxi, up to 4 people for that amount. If you cruise out of Ft Lauderdale the fare will be more as its 30 miles from the airport to the port and the fare will be about $75. In Miami/Ft Lauderdale you'll have multiple ships and departure dates and better rates for cruises.

Go with Miami. I've never been out of Canaveral, but I'm sure it's smaller and easier, and that's where the advantage ends. The best deals on the best cruises are from Miami. More ships, more cruise lines, cheaper prices, better itineraries. If it's no harder for you to get to Miami, there's no reason at all to leave from Port Canaveral unless you have a fear of crowds or traffic.

Either one the only thing the ports are there for is so you can check in and check out. The only thing that would be a problem is if its organized or not. I've been through Port of Canaveral as a port of call and i thought it looked nice but we didn't have to do the checking in there.

Assuming the cruises are about equal, if you plan to stay a while afterwards there is more to do in Orlando and the hotel rates are about half what they are in Miami.
