RE: The luge track in Vancouver, is there a specific length that it is supposed to be?

Since the unfortunate death of the Georgian athlete, they shortened the track somewhat. That made me wonder, is there a certain length it has to be or does it vary from year to year or track to track? Can it longer than a certain length and not shorter, or shorter but not longer, etc.

Not really. Just what the track designers want to do. Longer generally means faster, which means more exciting races.

The one at Whistler is the fastest one out there. Later Olympic sites have been told before these games started "This track is too close to the limits of safety - dial the top speeds back"
