It is basically a cover up for people who really mean it in a gay way

If it's some stranger then it's kind of offensive, but if it's a friend of mine and they say "no homo" then I know they are joking with me. One example is I have a friend who is like a bro to me, he tells me he loves me "no homo," because we get along real well but he's not a homo...when he tells me "no homo" I just think of it as he doesn't love me that way because I know he's not a homosexual.

It's a defensive mechanism used by individuals not secure with their own sexuality. That's what I tend to think.
