Grasshoppers are more abundant and jump on me when I'm mowing in the fall. I don't see praying mantis' around here much, they have long skinny legs.
They eat plant leaves around here.

grasshopper eats anything. praying mantis eats mostly other insects, maybe small lizards and such.
A grasshopper looks like an elongated cricket, while a praying mantis is thin, has a segmented body, oddly shaped head, and extended arms that grasp onto things. the praying mantis in my opinion is very elegant and are fun to observe, especially when they catch something

What = an information request.
Both eat other insects, but grasshoppers may eat plants also.
