How to get money back from a friend without being a jerk?

A few weeks ago, my husband and I got our tax return. Before anyone asked if they could borrow anything (mostly my husbands family) I said no, told everyone not to even ask, I had plan to remodel my house. And add another room on.

A day after I told some friends that, they called to borrow money, saying they would be getting 1550 back on their returns. And could totally pay me back, so I borrowed them 230 ( 50 here, 30 there, and 150 the last time, over one week)

That Friday came and went and they called and said they didn’t get it yet, something about it taking another week or so before their check would get there. So I bit my lip and went on. The 5th (2 weeks later) I asked again, they said they HAD gotten their taxes back on the date they first said they would, but only got 900 back, they bought a new computer and some new clothes for their daughter. Said they were going to have money on the 15th (didn’t say how, and both aren’t working, so I didn’t ask. The less I know, the better) I called today and asked about it, she said “Oh, we don’t have it, not sure when we will, I’ll call you whenever I get it)

I know 230 doesn’t sound like a lot, but we used every bit of our return for the remodel… expecting this money for my bills. I don’t want to be late, I hate being late on my bills, like everyone else. And I’m to the point were I just want to yell and scream at her, but I know this wont get my money back to me.

All together they owe my husband and I about 650 dollars. He lost his job early last year and we’ve been helping them with little bits here and there, mid summer I quit because they’re not looking for another job. I don’t need all 650 back, I only really need 200 right now for my bills.

My question is, how can I get my money without being rude and losing a friend

Things like this really peeve me, that's partly why I hate loaning money to people, because it seems like I'm always having to ask for it back. First, you realize, of course, that you should have stuck to your plan and not have loaned the money, right?

Basically, all you can do is continue to ask for your money back, but try not to get too nasty or annoying about it. I would ask based on when they might be getting money. You loaned money to people who don't even work!?! You're way too nice.

I almost suggested you take them to small claims court, but you probably have little proof that you actually loaned the money to them since it was a little here and a little there, and they probably don't have the money to pay you back anyway. So, just keep asking, don't be too pesky, but don't give up either, and most importantly, STOP loaning people money. You, like me and a lot of other nice people, have a very hard time saying NO. So let's practice; you and I, NO, NO, NO!!!

Good luck. I'd appreciate an email telling me if you ever get it back. Thanks. And, by the way, they can't be very good friends if they did this to you.
