I'm not too sure of dates, the Great Timbuktu Empire was locxated in present day Mali. It might have existed during the date you're looking for. Check Timbuktu empire on wikipedia for confirmation.

it was called Timbuktu as previous answerer rightly pointed out
I think it is on united nations heritage sites list , check it out or google "Timbuktu"
