What's all this stuff about "S reg" and "03 plate" mean?

I'm from the USA, and I have no idea what these terms mean. Yesterday someone said they had a Hyundai, but they didn't give a model name like we use here, just "S reg" and Coupe. Heard stuff like this for other cars which are sold here in the US too, as well as Vauxhalls and such. Are these model designations, or something else?

A short explanation if possible would be appreciated, or better yet, some web links for research and future reference. Also interested in websites for auto parts stores in Europe and other technically oriented sites dealing with cars and light trucks.

the S and 03 thing is about the age of the car. Until 2000 we had a letter at the beginning of the plate to denote the year of registration of the vehicle i.e. Y504 JHK would have been registered in 2000. Then, because we got to the end of the alphabet, (we don't use Z), it was changed to a new system which meant that if the car was registered between March and August 31st it would have 01 (2001), 02 (2002) 03 (2003) etc, and if it was registered between 1st Sept and 28th Feb it would be 51, 52, 53 etc. So, in summary, by looking at the registration plate you can tell when the car was first registered or put on the road.

I tried looking a site up to explain this to you, but they confused me, and i live here!! hope this helps!

They refer to the year of registration for vehicles sold in England, Scotland and Wales.

"S reg" refers to the old style of number plate (licence plate).

If the 'S' is a suffix on the plate, then the vehicle was registered between August 1977 and July 1978.

If the 'S' is a prefix on the plate, the vehicle was registered between August 1998 and February 1999.

"03 plate" refers to the new style of registration number.

It means the vehicle was registered between March 2003 and September 2003.

Don't worry, a lot of Brits don't understand how our vehicle registration system works, either!!

The link below gives you some insight into how it functions.

yeh, basically we used a single letter of the alphabet at the of the registration number from the year1963 ,( ,eg, RDT 548 A)in alphabetical order but excluding I, O and Z to avoid confusion.

Then ! when we ran out of letters we put the letter at the begining,( year of 1983) example A 542 LFR)

Then, when we had used all the letters up once again we had to go to he new system where we used 01, registered first period of 2001, then 51, second period of 2001,

then 02 , first period of year 2002, then 52 second period of 2002. and so on.

Hope I have explained ok and not confused you .
