Short Prom Dresses vs. Long Prom Dresses?
Ok, so prom is coming up and I've been freaking out over what style of dress to get.
I have an hour-glass figure, so I looked up some longer dresses and found out that a "mermaid" dress would look nice. But, I don't want to trip with a floor-length dress because I don't really want to wear high heels (my boyfriend isn't much taller than I am and heels will make me taller than him, which he HATES).
So, I was wanting to go with a shorter dress, but the problem is that my legs are much longer than my torso (proportionally), so I don't want the dress to look too short.
Do you have any suggestions or personal experiences with dresses to help me narrow down my decision of short vs. long dresses?
Thanks!
Oh, another reason why I'm debating is because my boyfriend told me a few days ago that he wants to see me in a longer one because whenever he hears "prom," he thinks of long, formal dresses. So, I'm kinda debating this because I want him so say "WOW," but at the same time, I'M the one stuck in the dress for 6 hours. ;)

Honestly, I think you'd be best with a long dress. I don't know much about what style goes best on what body type, but I do think that everyone should wear a long (or at least long-ish) dress to prom. I don't think it's classy enough to wear a dress that only comes to your knees. I mean, think about it...This is PROM! You should look and feel like a princess! You can wear a nice short dress to any formal or even semi-formal event, but how often do you get the chance to wear a long, beautiful gown?
...Although if this is just junior prom, and you still plan on going to prom as a senior as well, I guess that's a good excuse to not want to look too over the top this year. Of course this is all just my opinion. Feel free to ignore it. =P
I'm sure if you look hard enough (you are starting early, so that's good! I started like a week or two before prom! Ugh...), you can find a dress that you can wear flat shoes with and not trip over. If worse comes to worse, you could have your dress hemmed. I bet that would be pretty costly though.
Have you thought about looking for a dress that only goes halfway between your knees and ankles? I doubt you could find too many "mermaid" style dresses like that, but if you really do have an hourglass figure (particularly one that would look good in dress that is as form-fitting as a mermaid), I'm sure any style would look great on you! But if you are mostly just interested in the mermaid style, I can't say I blame you - I think it's gorgeous!
You could also just wear kitten heals that are tall enough that you won't trip, but short enough that you don't look taller than your boyfriend. Maybe the same height, but not taller.
I hope this jumble of thoughts helps you some lol. And I hope you find that perfect dress!
*EDIT*
After reading the other responses, I really don't know what kind of dancing these girls were doing that made it harder to do in a long dress. I don't remember a lot about how people danced at my prom, but I'm pretty sure they weren't exactly trying to be on America's Best Dance Crew or anything, lol. And I guess awkward freak dancing might be more difficult? I dunno.

It seems like most stores sell longer dresses and that's what most girls tend to go with too.Long dresses can be long enough that you can't really see what shoes a girl is wearing,so you could maybe wear flats instead of heels and still look completely fine. But there are a lot of nice shorter dresses out there too,and if you chose one of those then you'd definitely stand out more,so I guess in the end it all depends on what your style is,what type of dress would look best on you,and what kind of look you want to go for:)

I wanted a long dress for prom, but there were none when I went shopping. So I got a short dress, and I am happy I did. My dress flowed so I could twirl and it would twirl. My friend had a skin tight dress and she didn't have as much fun dancing. I did have a long dress for my semi-formal and dancing wasn't as much fun in it. You couldn't move the same as you can in a short dress. So my opinion is go with a short dress, just not too short. Mine went to a little above my knees.

well it will be difficult to suggest which dress would look good on you as i haven't seen you in person. but check out below link which contains 60 dresses which are recommended for prom. the list has both long and short dresses. select the one you like. and remember Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
best of luck

My personal opinion is that if you have long legs, flaunt them. Or if you aren't comfortable with that, you could always get a shorter dress that looks great with a pair of flats and throw on some colorful or shimmery leggings. Stores like Forever 21 or Anchor Blue have leggings and tights in interesting, classy cut-outs and patterns.

Go for the longer dress and wear shorter heals.
A Prom is supposed to be formal and you feel and look better.
Who's going to see your feet, in a longer dress?!
Go Figure!

short prom dress may now indeed again become a trend and is so popular, it may also be one of your reasons for choosing a short prom dress. but trust me, long prom dress will make you look more beautiful and graceful. when a man holding a woman's higher because it uses high heels would make these men feel proud, does not feel inferior.
maybe you can find on how to choose a long prom dress here
