5-week-old difficulty with bowel movements and strange poop texture/color?
I breast feed and supplement with small amounts of formula. My daughter has been having difficulty for the past two weeks having a bowel movement, and my pediatrician suggested giving her 2 oz. of pear juice a day to help things along. That worked for two days, and her poop was really runny. However, the past 3 days she's straining and uncomfortable. Yesterday she did go, but the poop was almost black and very thick. This morning there was a little smear on her diaper, and it was also black and thick. Any suggestions about what I can do or any ideas about what this might be? Of course I will call my pediatrician, but it's a Saturday morning and she won't be in until Monday.

we had the same problem forumla made her constipated, in the end we had to cange to a "comfort" formuls which is specifically designed for colic and constipation, it helps make their poops softer! try 2oz cooled boiled water with 2 teaspoons BROWN suger, i usually wouldnt agree with giving babies sugar but the natural molasses in the brown sugar has a laxitive effect...honestly it worked for us!!! now shes 6 months and very rarely is constipated, wen she is we give her a baby food with prunes in it and a drink of juice and that usually does the job!!! shes still on Aptamil Comfort formula!

First off, I'd say stop the prune juice. A baby this young really should have nothing but breastmilk or formula. An exclusively breastfed baby DOES NOT get constipated. Breastmilk is a natural laxative. If a baby is constipated, they have dry, hard, formed stools when they do go. It is NORMAL for many breastfed babies to begin skipping days and not having a BM ever day around this age. This is because with breastmilk, there is very little waste! They are able to absorb and use most of the nutrients in it! Starting around this age, some breastfed babies may only poop once a week. NORMAL, as long as it isn't hard and formed. (But look out, as it'll probably be a complete diaper blow out when she does go!)

Is she having trouble with the type of formula you are supplementing with? Can you try to exclusively breastfeed for a few days and see if that helps? There are also tricks with karo syrup and prune juice, but I haven't had to use them myself. I believe there is a suppository you can get at the drug store too. I'd talk to your doctor and inquire if she might have an allergy to an ingredient in her formula, or something you are eating and passing through your milk,

I have three kids and had the same thing, i breast fed with formula also, her body is still adjusting she will be fine, the black poop is from the iron in the formula. They make formula now with alot of extra iron in it

sounds like an intolerance to me, thats exactly what my daughter had before i found out she had a lactose intolerance..
is her poop dark green flecked with little white bits? if so i'd say its definitely a lactose or milk protein intolerance.. might be worth trying to supplement her with some soya formula or go to your doctor and see if you can get some lactose free formula, see if it makes a difference, if it does - problem solved, if it doesnt its not gonna do any harm...

Try the suppositories - make sure they're baby-size so you don't have to cut them up. If one of them doesn't help her do a smelly in 5-30 minutes, call the doctor asap!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't listen to these posters that say anything about syrup or sugar should be given to your newborn it can make her sick and give her insulin resistance... its the Iron its making her constipated... rub her belly... the trick to getting rid of constipation is hydration so just keep giving her as much breast milk as you can and if you give her water make sure its sterilized and not too much because that could make her sick too
Source(s): I breastfeed and used to supplement with formula before my daughter started rejecting it... she had dark green poop on days she had formula btw and it was thicker
