When do brakes and rotors need to be replaced?

I had my front brakes and rotors replaced on my 04 Honda Odyssey about 25K miles ago. I drive mostly around town. I am not aggressive or a speed demon. Could I expect them to be worn out already?

Update:

Right now it sounds like a helicopter noise when I brake. Car is not at shaking point yet when braking. The needs maintenance light recently came on though.

brakes, you will hear them squeel when they need to be replaced, or grind. Rotors you will know when they need to be TURNED, (dont always replace them) when you begin to feel your car shake when you brake. If you just bought rotors, you should be good with only having them turned when you get your brakes serviced probably for the rest of the time you own the car.

Yep. Heavy vehicle. It also depends on how you drive. If you brake in turns you're going to do a whole lot of damage to your braking components (i.e. you brake while turning; it's worse with heavy fwd vehicles). The way to reduce this damage is to brake prior to the curve and power through it...not sure if you can accomplish this in an odyssey however.

25K isn't very many miles for a set of brakes, most cars will get much more than that. If you want to know you are going to need to get them checked by a mechanic

if they don,t have deep grooves cut into them and it don,t shake when you put the brake on then it,s safe to say they are still ok.
