I've never had a food poisoning problem with the street food in Morocco. The carts that sell the most food usually have the freshest foods, there is no need to hold it for hours or rewarm it to serve. The tables and food stalls that set up in late afternoon in Djma El Fna have some great food and a very good price too. They have numbers on each stall and if a tourist complains about food poisoning they can be investigated, as can the orange juice carts because they are numbered too. There are also a number of restaurants surrounding Djma El Fna, many types to choose from. It's a great view if you go to one that has an upstairs balcony and you can watch the people down below.

Djma El Fna and surrounding plaza has many things to do, you can spend an entire day walking through the bazaar and seeing the sideshows. There is a good barbecue place (lamb that is roasted in a pit) there in Djma too, if you like lamb. Marjorelle Gardens is nice peaceful place to visit, bring a camera to take photos. Ourika Valley is a great daytrip during the hot summer months, take a taxi to and from the area, there are many small outdoor tagine restaurants along the cool, shallow river nestled between the mountains.

Just like any crowded tourist area, wear a money belt or hold your handbag tightly to your body, dress more on the modest side (women), and make sure you agree on a price before you take a taxi anywhere.

If you want to take a photo of the monkey sitting on your shoulder at Djma, just a warning: you will immediately feel the need to take a shower, those little monkeys stink.

I travel to some very dodgy places and have a basic rule for food.

NEVER eat anything prepared on the street.

Look at how clean the eating area is in a cafe or restaurant, if this is dirty then so is the kitchen

Always eat where the locals eat and, if you can, ask for for your food to be really hot, this kills most bacteria.

    Finally, Take immodium!
