Okay I gonna catch major heat for this, but I've been wanting to say this for a minute now...?

Cam'Ron > Big L

Agree/disagree? Why?

I prefer Cam's multi's, flow, charisma, and sometime his punchlines over Big L's.

Big L is overrated, still good and a legend, but people act like he's a top 5 rapper. Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous is a 4/5 and The Big Picture is a 3/5. While Cam'Ron has three 4/5 albums (Come Home Wit Me, Purple Haze, and Crime Pays)...call me Cam stan or L hater, but I'm neither. I'm just telling you how I see it.

And I get it, L didn't have a chance to put out more material as he died early, but why was it taking him so long to release a sophomore album? You think if dude was as skilled as people claimed he was, he would've recorded more verses, you know?

I love to hear your thoughts/comments on this. Who knows, maybe someone can change my opinion as I know I'm gonna get called a retard for this.

Update:

I liked Confessions, 3/5. But the production was sub-par and Cam's voice wasn't "there", yet. And his flow was still lacking. I prefer his Dip-Set days more. And Crime Pays was a top 5 2009 mainstream release.

Cam's delivery, though, is underrated. It's dope, IMO.

SDE & KIlla Season are both a 2/5.

Update 2:

Cam is prolly the funniest of all rappers too. Very entertaining, but yeah some might think it's corny and annoying.

I disagree that Cam's better than Big L, but I agree with a lot of what you said. I think Big L had much better punchlines, but a lot of his lines that set up the punches were kinda weak and just there for the sake of rhyming, which is one of the main reasons why I don't rate him as highly as a lot of other people do. The same could be said for Cam though. I think Cam loses a lot of credit as a lyricist because he'll use the same word three or four times at the end of his bars to rhyme, and it comes across as lazy.

If you compare their discographies, I think Cam easily takes it. Most of his releases have been pretty good. Even S.D.E., which wasn't great, had some dope tracks like Where I'm From, Losin' Weight, etc. I think Big L gets more credit than Cam because of his work with DITC and because Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous was better than anything Cam ever released. And even though I liked The Big Picture, it wasn't a great album and doesn't stack up with some of Cam's releases. I find it funny that people talk sh*t about Bggie's Life After Death, but no one says anything about The Big Picture. It was obvious which direction Biggie was goin in, but the same could be said about Big L, especially since he was gonna sign to Rocafella right before he died. I don't think any of his future albums would have been as good as his first one so it's hard for me to believe that his discography was gonna get better or be as good as Camron's.

I agree that sometimes Cam had better multis and even outshined him on a few tracks back in their COC days, but I still preferred Big L, I think he was more skilled, and I thought he stood out the most within their crew. Big L is slightly overrated these days because he died, but he was still nice. I've even seen people claim Bloodshed was the best out of the crew after he died and he was mediocre at best, in my opinion. Artists get overrated when they die, but Big L does deserve credit. Cam doesn't get enough credit, but I still don't think he was more skilled than Big L.

    Nah... No way.

I don't see what you're trying to get at?

So because Cam'ron has the better production and has released more albums, that makes him the better RAPPER? (BTW, lyrically, Lifestyez of da Poor & Dangerous > Cam's existence). If we're talking, who is the better RAPPER, you're f*cking insane if you think Cam > L

    - Cam'ron's multi's are dookie compared to L's, seriously.

    - Both have nice flows

    - Big L is the king of charisma, so I don't understand how you would prefer Cam's, but whatever.

    - And Cam'ron has some decent punchlines, but he is TRULY the salvation army Big L when it comes to that forte. Big L was the best, there is absolutely no comparison.

But if we're talking who has the better body of work, that's debatable (Because personally I listen to Big L way more that I do Cam'ron).

So yeah, if you really think Cam'ron is a better rapper than L, you're just a hater, straight up.

  • I personally can't stand Cam'ron, the guy is a joke to me. But at the same time, I think Big L gets very overrated. He was a very one dimensional rapper and there are only so many punchlines I can take before I want to hear something with a bit more substance.

I don't agree with you and I don't think Cam'ron is *better* than Big L, but I don't think you're being as out there as all that compared to how someone with Big L's dick stuffed in their mouth like it's a turkey on Thanksgiving might.

Nah. I will say though that Big L is mad overrated here, and Cam'ron doesn't get anywhere near the props he deserves. But it's unfair to compare their discographies, since Big L died when he was 24 and at that age Cam had only released Confessions and S.D.E, which were both pretty meh albums.

I must admit... Cam'Ron is one of my guilty pleasures of hip hop... I know he can come off as annoying to some...and flat out ridiculous, but I think dude is hilarious. I dont know about those ratings you gave him for the albums...but I did personally enjoy all of them. But honestly its because I dont take him too serious, so when he does drop good albums its just a pleasant surprise. As far as him being better then Big L, I cant really call it... Big L just doesnt have enough material... I guess if I had to choose between listening to ONLY Big L stuff or ONLY Cam'Ron stuff, I probably would pick Cam too...just cause he Big L is lacking in material... That being said... I think Confessions of Fire or whatever its called was his best ish... Horse and Carriage was wack...but the rest of that album was dope to me...

    Here's where you lost me....

You gave Crime pays and Purple Haze 4 out of 5 ratings....whoa....

If you were going to give Cam a 4/5 for something...at least let it be Confessions of Fire....if you don't mind the fact that Jadakiss and Mase helped him write that album...

Also...skill and quantity have nothing to do with each other....Just because he's good doesn't mean it comes easy...So that doesn't really make sense my dude....

I mean if you like Cam thats cool....i wish he would put out more decent material...i'm still on that "You Owe Me" song that they sampled mercenaries 2 for...he had heat on those bars there...

    But even with that said....lyrically speaking...Cam ain't got sh*t on L...

I could put cam ahead of Big L if Cam had a better discography...but since he really only has two albums that were good (not only for fans of his)...i can't...

So with those two things against him...nah can't see Cam ahead of L....and yes Big L is overrated...but i think your overrating Cam a bit on this one in return my dude....

    EDIT:

WHOA....like i said before my dude...i think your overrating him quite a bit man....This also sounds more like a preference thing...you said his "flow" wasn't quite "there" yet...well what does "there" mean...because his flow now is like Dr. Seuss...which most people hate....not to mention sounds rather silly in most cases...

Personally....i felt Cam was at home on that Popular Demand Verse.....thats Killa season....

I don't listen to Cam'Ron enough to give any kind of credible answer but I would love to buy this shyt. I think Big L is as overrated as it gets. I'm going to have to go back and listen to some Cam and see if I think he is better. But as far as just people from DITC, I think AG, O.C. and Lord Finesse are all better than Big L. I'd like to say guys like Cam'Ron and even Mase were better too, but I haven't heard enough to say that.

I think Cam'ron lost credibility when he started the whole dipset nonsense with nonsense people to back him (Jim Jones). SDE was a dope album, both lyrically and production wise.

As far as Big L, he's probably the king of one-liners, but I can see how he would have ended up somewhat one-dimensional.

L's punchlines aren't that great. All I gotta say about this, but I see what you're saying. Although this same argument can be applied to a variety of rappers (ie. Ras Kass > Pac, Big Pun > Biggie, etc.)
